In the MACBA mainly special exhibitions take place of prestigious artists, sculptors, painers and film makers. In addition, the MACBA provides workshops, conferences, film projects and audiovisuals, which encourages visitors to particpate.
The museum opened in 1959 when Alexandre Cirici began to push contemporary art. Alexandre Cirici and Cesáreo Rodríguez Aguilera publsihed the first art works. The political driven exhibition "Art and Peace" was shown in 1959. This exhibition indiated the political boundaries during the dictatorship of Franco.
